Fishing with Jimmy West Part 2

Jackie Hutton and I decided to take advantage of Capt. Jimmy West's ladies fishing special today.

You know when your guide says "you should have been here yesterday" -- well today was yesterday.

We started out about 7am and headed to a "popular" reef in East Bay. Had a nice topwater bite right away and put a few in the box. Grinded for awhile until Jimmy figured out the pattern and started catching them again. We had our 20 limit by about 10:30am and then played catch and release for another 30 minutes or so. All the trout were between 20-23" and most weighed between 3-4 pounds. These were some really fat fish. Missed some really nice ones that came unbuttoned.

We asked Jimmy to find us some redfish and I've always been curious about how to find big reds in the middle of the bay. So we took off towards the middle until Jimmy spotted some slicks. He was pretty sure they were redfish and sure enough as soon as we trolled up on them we started seeing giant swirls. Jackie casted her Pink Skitterwalk and had a blowup but the fish missed. It came right back around and this time hit it hard and the fight was on. The only problem though it was a one-sided fight -- Jackie couldn't even get the fish to turn it was so big. After several seconds the fish broke off. Right after that I threw my plastic in and hooked up too. This one hit like a freight train and started taking some serious drag. I just knew it was going to spool me. After several trips around the boat and a lot of panting on my part, I finally got it to the boat. It was a beautiful 37" redfish. That is the biggest one I have ever caught.

The fish had scattered by then so Jimmy tried to find them again. We found them once but couldn't hook up. Third time was the charm and Jackie hooked another one on her topwater. This time she won and brought in a nice 32" redfish. Meanwhile, Jimmy landed a 25" out of the same school.

We headed in about 1:00 and Jimmy cleaned our fish. We ended up with 3 gallon bags stuffed to the top with trout filets.

This was my Mother's Day present -- what a fun day!

Forum: Fishing Reports

I told someone on the group trip that Wright & McGill had some good waders thinking that is where mine came from. Actually they came from http://albrightflyfish.com/items/bridgestone-fishing-waders/list.htm
however, they no longer have women's waders -- only mens. I still like the material they are made of (very lightweight) and they are a decent price right now (on sale for $68). It's ashame they no longer carry women's sizes.

L. L. If you get a pair of men's waders the stocking foot is usually huge and makes it difficult to get your boot over them because the extra material is all wadded up in your boot.

Be sure and get stingray boots and stingray shin guards to go along with your waders. You will need a larger size to go over your waders than you would normally wear.

Forum: Just Stuff

Big Win for one of our Sisters

When you fish a redfish tournament there are three things that go through your mind:

1. You HOPE to bring in 2 Redfish
2. You WISH to bring in 2 Big Redfish
3. You DREAM to bring in 2 Giant Redfish and WIN.

Kaylin achieved that dream Saturday during the first leg of the Galveston Redfish Series.

Everyone awoke to serious thunderstorms and lots of rain and lightning. I had learned at the Captains meeting that Kaylin (msaddicted) would be without her husband/partner, Thomas, for this leg and would be fishing the tournament out of her kayak. That's a big handicap for most of us but not Kaylin. She has won many kayak tournaments.

After waiting out the storms, she finally got launched and started fishing. She hooked her first fish but it came unbuttoned before getting it to the net. That can really mess up your positive thinking during a tournament. But, not Kaylin, as she went on to land two PERFECT tournament reds and was back at her house changing clothes by 11am. Kaylin was first in line for the beggining of the weigh-in and weighed in an incredible 17.45 pounds for 2 reds. Then she had to wait 1 1/2 hours to see if anyone could top that. No one came even close as the 2nd place winner was 2 pounds short of her weight.

It is so exciting to see one of our own do so well. And, anyone that knows Kaylin knows that not luck but SKILL had everything to do with her victory.

Big Congratulations to Kaylin!

Forum: Fishing Reports

27 inch trout

Ok, my husband and I haven't been on the water in a while. We really are trying to not to put too many hours on our motor since we are trying to sell our boat. But, the motor needs to be run. (I did loose my hat while heading to our first spot--my favorite hat of all of my hats).
We headed out early this morning to put in at the ramp hoping to beat the crowd. Thank God it wasn't too bad. My first case I was going to get a fish no matter what, and size didn't matter. For some reason I thought I was stuck on something. But, I wasn't. Oh my God, the fish took off, and came out of the water. We thought it was a red. When I got it to the boat it took off again. All I could do is take my time, and allow the fish to do what it wanted. When I got it back to the boat Mark got a good look at it. I remember he said, "It's a nice trout". When he got it in the net we did not realize how nice it was. I was so excited, it was huge. When Mark measured it, it was 27 inches. The digital scale said it was almost 8lbs. My God it beat my 25.5 lb trout. When I was releasing the trout I made sure I took my time, and held on to it until it was able to swim off on its own. I kept looking in that water to make sure it didn't die. Thank God it didn't, we believe it was spawning. While I was looking for the 27 incher my line took off. It was a nice 24 inch trout. All I could do is say, "Thank you God". I needed the tugs on my line big time. But, I didn't expect the 25 inch trout an hour later. All I can say is my students is going to see me with a huge smile, and a story on Monday. They know how much I love to fish, and know when I haven't been fishing.

Forum: Fishing Reports

Went to my family's women retreat this weekend. We had 24 of us there this year. We stay at Heart of Texas Lake Resort at their lodge. Had a great weekend and got to wet a line. Saturday night nothing was biting but went out at 7am Sunday morning and the fish were hitting the top of the water. Caught a nice bass on a minnow under a cork. Also caught a sandy (??) and a black bass on a Baby Minus 1. It sure is a little different than saltwater fishing.

Forum: Fishing Reports

Cindy, Roberta, Jackie and I went on a trip with Capt. Jim West yesterday. Fresh water runoff had the bay pretty ugly. Caught about 5-6 trout early and then it was fairly slow until about 11:30. The water cleared up some and the bite turned on for about 45 min. and we caught some more trout and accidentally ran across a school of big reds. Cindy landed a really nice 28" and Jimmy got an oversized one to the boat and broke it off so he could go land Cindy's fish. I kept missing my bites and lost one right at the boat. Ended up with 15 fat trout and the one red. It was a beautiful day and it was really nice having someone else run the boat, take our fish off the hook, change our lures for us and generally just treat us like we were royalty -- LOL.

Jimmy said he would continue his discounted ladies trips until around July 4th so if anyone wants a great deal on a guided trip give him a call or shoot him an email. Weekday trips will be easier to book but he can possibly do an occassional Saturday.
http://www.bolivarguideservice.com/

Forum: Fishing Reports
